Florida State College at Jacksonville, formerly known as Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ), has a RN nursing program that leads to an associate of science in nursing. There is a separate application process to enter the program. The pool of applicants is highly competitive. Good grades will be needed in order to succeed in getting in.
FSCJ Prerequisite Courses
All five prerequisite courses need to be completed prior to application with a grade of C or better:
- Human Anatomy and Physiology I with lab
- Human Anatomy and Physiology II with lab
- Chemistry (1 year in high school or any college chemistry course)
- Microbiology with lab
- College Algebra or higher math course
It is highly unlikely that a student with a 2.0 GPA in the above five courses will gain admission. Students will probably need to aim for As in as many of the five classes as possible.
PSB-NAT Exam for FSCJ Nursing
Students need to take the PSB-NAT exam (Psychological Bureau Inc. Nursing School Aptitude Test). Test sites are only located in Florida. Students living out of state should consider filling out the PSB Off-Site Test Request.
The PSB-NAT test is scored as follows:
- Academic Aptitude – 90 points
- Reading Comprehension – 40 points
- Science Aptitude – 90 points
NAT Maximum number of points is 220.
The highest score in each section will be used if the test is taken more than once. For example, if the science aptitude score was higher during the first test. It will be used instead. Here is an excellent PSB-NAT test preparation guide.
Those who are looking to study for the science section should concentrate on anatomy and physiology. There are very few questions on chemistry.
Students may only take the PSB-NAT test twice per year. Three months must elapse between attempts.
CPR Requirement for FSCJ Nursing
A current CPR certification with American Heart Association’s BLS healthcare provider certification will be needed prior to the application.
FSCJ / FCCJ Nursing Point System
- GPA in the prerequisite courses multiplied by 3 = 120 points max
- PSB-NAT score multiplied by 0.64 = 140.8 points max
- Health related work experience = 20 points
Maximum number of points is 280.8.
Health related work experience is defined as employment as a EMT, LPN, respiratory therapist, or FSCJ trained medical assistant. Each year of work experience is worth 5 points. All work experience must be within the past five years. Work must involve direct patient contact. Maximum points awarded for work experience is 20. Documentation must be on employer stationary.
Cutoff Scores for FSCJ Nursing Point System
Cutoff for Fall 2010 was 202.64 with 144 seats available. Other terms in the recent past had cutoffs ranging from 190 to 205. Keep in mind that some students decline their acceptance, so it is quite possible to be accepted all the way to the week before classes start.
Students should also take general education courses prior to application as well. It is best to complete all GE requirements prior to entry in the nursing program since they need to be completed prior to the last semester in the program.
