College of the Canyon is located just north of the Los Angeles metro area in Santa Clarita, CA. It is a two year program (not including GE and prerequisite courses) leading to an associate degree in nursing (ADN). The nursing program is accredited by the NLN, and graduates of this program are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam to become a registered nurse.
Prerequisite Courses for College of the Canyon RN Nursing Program
The following courses are required prior to application for admission:
- English 101
- Eligibiltiy for Intermediate Algebra
- Communication 105 or 233
- Psychology 101
All prerequisite courses must be completed with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. However, meeting this minimum requirement does not guarantee admission into the RN program.
Admissions Criteria for College of the Canyon ADN RN Nursing Program
The college uses the chancellor’s “Model Prerequisite for Enrollment in ADN” formula which takes the following into consideration:
- Core Biology GPA (all A&P courses and microbiology courses taken at the college level)
- Number of core biology repetitions including withdrawals
- English GPA (all English courses regardless of the level of the course)
- Overall GPA
The minimum chancellor’s score at College of the Canyons is 70%. Those who pass this minimum will be invited to take the TEAS test. Students will also need to take the TEAS test.
Applicants who are denied admissions after the TEAS test are given a remediation plan to complete. If it is completed by the deadline, they will be put into a random selection process. If it is not completed, the student is no longer eligible for the RN nursing program.
Tips for RN Applicants to Be More Competitive
There are a few things that will make an application more competitive. They are:
- Complete all courses without repeats or withdrawal.
- GPA of 3.0 or better in all biology courses
- GPA of 3.0 or better in all English courses
- Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 have been admitted before, albeit they had a very high biology and English GPA. A perfect academic record is not necessary to gain admission. However, students do need a very good academic record to gain admission.
