Cal Sate Long Beach (CSULB) School of Nursing offers a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) as well as several other graduate programs. CSU Long Beach no longer offers an accelerated nursing program. All applicants must meet general CSU university admissions requirements and gain admission to the school of nursing, which is a completely separate process.
At this time, CSULB will not accept applications for those who have already earned a bachelor’s degree. However, the university will admit them to the entry level MSN program. You will need a 3.0 cumulative GPA for this program as well as California residency. There will be 48 seats available for the Fall 2011 MSN cohort.
The BSN program normally accepts 90 students each fall and sprint semester. Applications are due on February 15 for fall and September 15 for spring.
Cal State Long Beach Nursing Program Prerequisites
Below are the courses required to apply to the CSULB BSN program:
- Human Anatomy with lab (4 semester units or more)
- Human Physiology (4 semester units or more)
- Microbiology (4 semester units or more)
- Chemistry with lab (5 units or more and must cover general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry)
All of the above science courses must have been taken within the past five years. For example, Fall 2011 applicants cannot use a course that was taken earlier than Fall 2006.
Students need to take one course in each of the four general education categories which are quantitative reasoning (eg. math), oral communication (eg. speech), college composition, and critical thinking.
All prerequisite course grades must be a C or higher (a C- grade is not acceptable). You will need to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the science prerequisite courses as well as a GPA of 3.0 in the GE courses. The minimum GPA will not be enough to gain admission.
No more than one course can be in progress at the time the application is filed. The admission GPA for an in-progress course will be calculated as a grade of C. Most students will want to finish all courses before applying.
TEAS Testing Requirement for Cal State Long Beach BSN Nursing
All applicants must take the TEAS atest prior to the application deadline. There is no limit to the number of retakes, but the student must indicate which score to use.
Selection Criteria for CSU Long Beach Nursing Admissions
- GPA in science prerequisites 4 points (minimum 3.0 GPA)
- GPA in general education prerequisites 4 points (minimum 3.0 GPA)
- TEAS 2 points (minimum score of 70%)
- TEAS Math Score 2 points
The highest scoring candidates will be invited to a mandatory faculty interview. After the interviews, successful applicants will be offered admission into the nursing program.
Admissions to the BSN program at CSU Long Beach is highly competitive. The average science GPA for admitted students was 3.85 for Fall 2010. The average TEAS score for Fall 2010 was 89.5%.
Because the program is under impaction, only California residents can be considered for admissions. However, the program might admit two highly qualified F-1 visa applicants each semester. However, this is not a firm requirement.
